Many of my clients really struggle this time of year with all of the social functions, restaurant meals and family gatherings that revolve around food and alcohol.
Last week I covered my top tips and strategies around parties and grazing tables you can recap by clicking HERE
Clients say that they have no willpower when it comes to eating out and family feasts on Xmas day and Boxing day.
What happens is they make a 'bad' choice, feel like they have failed, fallen off the wagon, and got off the train. Then they beat themselves up for it with negative self-talk which just makes them overeat until they 'get back on track' in the New Year feeling defeated.
There is a good reason why you are no good around treat food yet.
You haven't had enough practice.
When I was 90kg I was hopeless around food at Xmas time (actually all the time).
But I decided to lose weight for good and I practised making better choices. It wasn't easy and sometimes I failed but I resolved to keep going until I was good at making great choices and had lost the weight.
Managing your mind around treat food and alcohol at celebrations is NOT about willpower, deprivation or resisting - remember what resists persists!
It is about being brave and getting strong. It is about the difference between saying I want to lose weight and actually DECIDING to lose weight.
When I first started lifting weights I was weak and my strength and technique were poor. Now I can lift heavy weights.
I DECIDED to learn how to do it and didn't give up if I failed and dropped the weight or did the exercise wrong. I just learnt from it and got stronger each time I tried.
The same applies to losing weight and getting healthy. You have to DECIDE to do it and then practice...a lot..be prepared to fail and never give up.
Often my clients get to the venue and don't know what to choose and panic, or get to a gathering and someone puts a drink in their hand and they panic.
To make things easier always have a plan. Go back to last week's strategies. Go online and find out what is on the menu (as a vegan I have to do this all the time anyway!) Ask the host what they are planning and who is taking what and offer to take your world-famous healthy platters (I take them anyway even when they are not needed - they always get eaten).
I have my Clean Collective gin and tonics or Kombucha with me and say no thanks I'll have one of these and I bought this platter...
'Oh, are you trying to lose weight - again?'
'Are you competing? I thought you had given all that up!'
'You are fine as you are"
'Don't lose too much weight"
'It's Xmas, let yourself go!" etc
Have your answer ready!
Mine goes like this .. 'no, I am just choosing to drink less and make healthier choices this year.'
You have to have your own back over this and the courage to tell people that this is your personal choice and not a reflection or judgement of their choices at all.
