#199 How to Enjoy Your Trips Without Gaining Weight
Healthy Travel & Weight Loss: How to Enjoy Your Trips Without Gaining Weight
Have you ever returned from a trip feeling sluggish, bloated, and frustrated with yourself?
- Many women fall into the trap of using travel as an excuse to overeat and abandon their health goals.
- But what if you could enjoy delicious food, explore new places, and still feel great when you get home? This blog will show you how!
I have just returned from four wonderful days in the South Island. Because I work from home, it's very easy to stay in work mode 24/7. So, getting away for a few days was refreshing. Although it was only four days, it felt like 10! I've come back energized and ready to take on the world.
While traveling, I noticed how many women use travel as an excuse to abandon their health and weight loss goals. They think, “I’ll start again when I get home” or “I have no control over my food choices, so why bother?” But the truth is, healthy travel is possible, and it all starts with the right mindset and small, strategic choices.
You are NOT on a 'Diet'!
The first mistake is seeing healthy eating as a temporary plan instead of a long-term lifestyle. In the Outlook for Life 12-week Program, we follow an 80/20 approach—80% of the time, we fuel our bodies with nutrient-dense foods, and 20% of the time, we celebrate life with food. This means you don’t have to “go off track” on holiday—you just continue your balanced lifestyle wherever you are. At Outlook, we call this staying on the train.
Enjoy Planned Treats.
When I travel, I plan and enjoy cocktails and local signature dishes and eat at great restaurants—but I still make mindful choices. I eat on purpose, most of the time making healthy choices, and when there isn't a healthy choice and it's not a planned treat, I practice portion control instead of going on a food rampage!
- I used to gain weight while traveling because I felt I had to “get my money’s worth.” But the truth is, more food doesn’t mean more enjoyment.
- A great trick when trying new things that aren't a planned meal is to stop after three bites—most of the pleasure from food comes in the first few bites, and after that, it’s just eating for the sake of it.
- You can always share a meal, take leftovers, or simply push the plate away when satisfied.
Make Smart Swaps to Stay on Track
Because I follow a plant-based way of eating, options while traveling can be challenging, but not impossible!
- On this trip, I found a tofu scramble on toast for breakfast and delicious plant-based meals like kumara fritters and sticky tofu with truffle risotto and Asian greens.
- When options were limited, I made simple swaps: removing the top bun from a veggie burger, skipping fries, and asking for extra salad.
- Small choices add up, and they help you feel energized instead of sluggish.
Stay Active & Feel Strong While Traveling
I always keep moving and love to walk and discover new places away from the road when I travel. One of the hardest things for me was seeing so many women struggling—struggling to get in and out of their plane seats, struggling to carry luggage, and struggling to walk up stairs or enjoy sightseeing.
- It broke my heart because I know how quickly women can transform their health.
- In just 12 weeks, we see amazing transformations; many clients lose 10kg, build strength, and completely change their energy levels.
- Simple habits like walking 15 minutes daily, strength training, and making mindful food choices can revolutionise your travel experience.
Real-Life Examples & Application
- Some of our program members have joined because they had big trips planned and wanted to feel their best.
- In just a few months, they lost weight, increased stamina, and felt amazing on their travels—walking all day without exhaustion, feeling confident in their clothes, and fully enjoying the experience.
- Travel should be about adventure, not struggling to keep up.
Don't let travel be an excuse to throw away your health goals. You can enjoy amazing food, make smart choices, and still feel great when you get home.
