#187 Mastering Nighttime Overeating: Strategies for Success
I used to be a terrible nighttime eater.
I was a secret nighttime eater.
I would wait until everyone was in bed then quietly open the fridge or pantry door being careful not to rustle packets and grab handfuls of food!
Was I hungry - no.
It was comfort, a reward, I felt like I deserved it. And it had become a habit.
I have learned to control my inner Labrador and I no longer need to use food this way.
If I was still struggling with this here is what I would do.
- Every time I found myself with my head in the cupboard I would stop and ask myself if was was physically hungry
If the answer is no not physically hungry
Then get curious what am I hungry for…
Recognition validation ….
Those have to come from you when you love and appreciate yourself you no longer need food to feel better in the moment
- Journal about why you need to use food in this way. Habit, reward, comfort etc
Take time to think about it.
2. Stop and drink water.
Breathe.
3. Be prepared to feel uncomfortable.
It won’t kill you and it won’t last long.
4. Congratulate yourself every time you don’t eat. (I put $2 in a jar)
Tick the days you don’t eat in your journal or on a habit tracker.
You will sleep better and wake up with more energy, and you will gradually feel accomplished and in control.
