#56 Scales don't always tell the true story
I'm often asked, "Why do I seem to gain weight when I exercise?"
I once had a client many years ago who wanted to compete in bodybuilding. She actually did really well and competed at the nationals.
When I started working with her she weighed 60kg and was 32% Body fat and a size 14. When she competed she weighed 64kg and was 10% body fat and a size 8. So this is an example of the scales not telling a true story.
But let’s be realistic here most of us don’t start at 60kg!
So how does exercise affect the scales if you weigh 130kg, 75 kg, or anywhere in between? Listen to today's blog to find out the truth! Here's are a few summary points from the video:
- When you exercise you break muscle fibers. These tiny little micro tears at a cellular level, cause inflammation. Water collects around the inflammation to bring in the nutrients required for repair and growth. 1litre of water weighs 1kg.
- Glycogen. The muscle also tries to refuel itself with glycogen. Glycogen is water and glucose. Over time the muscle becomes more efficient and needs less glycogen. Glycogen looks like runny honey and is heavy. Initial water/ glycogen gain may be 500g - 2kg but should only occur in the first 4-6 weeks of training and then drop off.
- The longterm gain of muscle tissue. Maybe a quick kilo initially but then if you can gain 500g per month for a while you are doing well. For seasoned exercisers, it is less than that.
5 Day Free Course
In January 2020 we ran a free 5-day course, it was so popular - we ended up with 87 of you on it!
We were going to run another one in the middle of the year but then COVID happened.

This free 5-day course “Figuring out the Weight loss puzzle” will start on the 24th Sept and run over the weekend finishing on Monday.
There will be a workbook, free pop-up Facebook group, and daily coaching with questions and answers.
