#51 Recovering from Surgery, Injury or Illness.
Recovering from surgery, injury or illness.
1. Make a realistic plan.
If you are having a scheduled surgery talk to your surgeon BEFORE your operation and make a plan with them for resuming your exercise routine or sports training.
You need to make a goal to get back to full fitness, but it does have to be realistic, otherwise you will either do too much and set your recovery back or you will get horribly frustrated.
Work out a realistic goal and time frame to hit that goal with your health professional. (Dr, physio, specialist)
Set little process goals along the way.
Listen to your body and be prepared to be flexible with that goal.
2. Eat well. Good nutrition can aid in the Healing Process.
Food gives your body the raw materials to boost immunity, fight infection, heal skin, nerves, soft tissue, and even bone.
Use:
- Quality proteins - tofu, beans, legumes, lean meat, chicken, fish and eggs.
- Good fats- avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oil, chia, flaxseed, hemp oil.
- Fruits - a wide variety of fresh fruits.
- Leafy greens- kale, spinach, silverbeet, baby spinach.
- Pre and probiotics- kefir, kombucha, kimchi, sauerkraut, fermented pickles, yoghurt.
- Vegetables- eat a rainbow of veggies aim for 4 handfuls daily including your leafy greens.
- Whole Grains- oats, buckwheat, bulgur wheat , quinoa, brown rice, wild rice, etc
3. Stay positive and don’t push yourself.
Build up slowly a little each week. Focus on what you can do, not what you can’t.
Work on core stability and perfecting your technique over volume.
Appreciate your body's amazing ability to heal.
